I had read that prices of wheat products may be rising soon, as Russia is halting wheat exports due to the drought and wildfires. See http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38594106/ns/business-eye_on_the_economy/ for more details.
According to news reports, Russia will start their ban August 15th and it will last until the end of the year. Russia is the world’s biggest wheat exporter so the ban is bound to cause a price increase in bread, pasta and other wheat products. The good news is the price spikes will not be as high as they were in 2008, but this could still have an impact on our wallets.
I was thinking I should stock up while prices are still reasonable, so I am buying a couple extra bags of flour and a few extra boxes of pasta, crackers and other long-lasting wheat products. I am not hoarding outrageous amounts — we don’t have unlimited pantry space, but I am making room for these items to last at least until the end of the year when prices (hopefully) would stabilize. Part of having the prepper mindset is paying attention to what’s going on in the news and around us. Even if the price increases don’t affect us, these are items I would use anyway so they will not go to waste.
Hi Bernie,
Honeyville seems to have the most reasonable prices for bucketed wheat. I will head down there tomorrow for a couple more. I am convinced that we will see increasing prices for commodities such as wheat, rice etc. Your advice is a good one for your readers! Bucketed wheat takes up VERY little room and provides a huge bang for the buck. I had a similar post yesterday at my blog http://www.everydaysurvivalguy.com.
Thanks,
Mark
Good idea buying the bucketed wheat. Don’t have a Honeyville we can drive to, but checking out their website now. Thanks!
At the risk of sounding like a “carpetbagger”, this will undoubtedly have a positive effect on American wheat farms!
Hope so, Security Guy… We need to produce more here in the states, and keep the money circulating locally, regionally, and nationally… Importing food and goods has to stop, and we need to begin manufacturing and producing in our nation for our consumers again. I hope we can do it.
One basic problem with the economy is too much importing on non-American goods. Hopefully these shortages, etc will be a wake-up call for us.
We’ve been buying flour in more qty. since I got back to more scratch cooking and it’s been nice to have a good supply on hand. Eventually we want to get a grain mill and buckets of wheat, but that’s a little bit down the road for us.

Yeah, this is bad… I just did a ton of research on this and it is no joke. Not sure how long it is going to take for bread prices, bags of flour, etc. to go up in price… Not good. Politically, if Russia decides to stockpile the wheat post the shortage it could prolong high prices.
